Bedroom Swap: The Boys’ Room

The main reason we decided to redo the bedrooms is because we have a pretty small home. When you look at the square footage, we live in about 1,900 square feet of it. Granted, my studio and the laundry room are in the basement, along with a bit of storage, but our bedrooms and main living spaces are all contained within that 1,900 square feet and we’re a family of seven.

We have two tiny bathrooms and three decent-sized bedrooms. They’re not anything grand and the house itself was built in 1910. With the current housing market and our financial situation, moving just isn’t an option. It’s off the table for now. We’ve looked several times over the years and even came close once or twice, but nothing has ever felt right or worked out. So for now, our only option is to stay and make this house work for us.

Right now, we’re preparing to transition our toddler into the older kids’ room. We’ve always co-slept. I know it’s a controversial topic, and I never actually intended to do it. I just wanted to sleep, and co-sleeping helped us do that. Over time, I grew to really love it. While it’s not perfect, it’s what worked for our family. But it’s time for her to have her own bed.

The challenge was that the girls’ room, although the same size as the boys’ room, was laid out in a way that couldn’t fit one more bed, dresser, or even extra storage. That’s when we decided it was time for a change. Not all of the kids were thrilled, some had to sit with the idea for a while. We have a few who are more resistant to change than others. But ultimately, it’s been the right decision.

I forgot how much work it takes to swap rooms. I went into it thinking, We’ll just do this real quick, and then it consumed my life for two straight weeks. It was harder than I imagined to get everything sorted and organized. I swear my kids are tiny hoarders—they have so much stuff! But we powered through, and in the end, we’re really happy with how the project turned out.

The paint colors we used are both from Sherwin Williams. The walls are Blustery Sky and the doors and trim are Fireweed. Check out the links below for the rest of the makeover items!
