Bedroom Swap: The Girls’ Room

So, we’ve talked about why we started this bedroom makeover and you’ve already seen the boys’ room reveal. Now, let’s chat about how we actually arrived at the designs for each of the bedrooms.

I have five kids and each one of them has opinions. Taking all of them into a paint store at once would have been the most overstimulating experience of my life. I know this because I’ve tried it before. This time, I took a different approach.

Before setting foot in the paint store, I talked with each of my kids about what colors they liked. This gave them the chance to tell me what they wanted to see in their new rooms. That way, they felt involved from the beginning, and I could prepare myself for the decision-making.

The girls were easy, they were dead set on purple. That’s all they wanted, and they weren’t budging.

The boys were trickier. One of my sons wanted to keep his exact same wall color. This was the kiddo most resistant to the change in the first place. After a few days, he settled on blue, while my other son wanted red. Now, not both boys loved red equally, so I had to figure out a compromise.

My solution? We painted the walls and ceiling blue, and used red for the trim. This way, both boys had a say, and the colors worked together in a fun way. I narrowed down the paint options ahead of time, choosing four shades of each color that complemented one another. Then I let the boys pick from that smaller selection. This method made the process smoother and less overwhelming.

With the girls, I again chose four purple shades with my oldest daughter. We brought them home and my younger daughter weighed in. Thankfully, both agreed on the same color. We ended up doing a two-tone design. We did the top half of the wall and the ceiling in a lighter version (the same color lightened by 50%). The bottom half, plus the trim, we painted in the darker shade.

When it came to curtains, I wanted more of a pattern since their previous ones were plain green. I selected a few options that I felt matched the purple palette, then let the girls choose their favorite.

We didn’t splurge on new bedding or furniture. Honestly, half the time the kids don’t even make their beds, and we did not need one more blanket floating around the house! The girls’ bedding worked fine with their purple room. While matching bedding for the boys would’ve been aesthetically pleasing, it wasn’t in the budget or truly necessary. Sometimes, paint alone can make the biggest impact, and in this case, it absolutely did.

At the end of the day, I spend a lot of time at home. We homeschool here, I work here, we live here. My environment impacts my mood, so I want our home to feel good to look at and live in. This process helped me achieve that, while letting my kids feel excited and proud of their new spaces.

The paint color we used for the girls’ room is Obi Lilac by Sherwin Williams. Check out the links below for the rest of the items used in our makeover!
