Do you love getting family pictures taken? I love the results. I love freezing some intentional moments in time. I love having photos to reflect on and watch the kids grow up over the years. So the effort is worth it! Take the time to get those family pictures done.
With Nella joining the family, and 3 years since our last photos, it was time! The first question when you hear family photos are happening, is what is everyone wearing?
There is no right or wrong way to go about choosing the outfits, but it can be overwhelming. Here’s how I picked what we were wearing, and a few other tips to make sure we captured the memories.
1. Ask what they want to wear. I didn’t ask everyone. Just my oldest daughter. Honestly, only the girls really care anyways. She picked a floral printed dress. I started styling everyone around that dress.

2. I picked 1 bold print and 1 small print. It is ok to mix prints, but you don’t want too many. I also mixed florals and dots. I’d be careful mixing linear patterns like stripes and plaids. It will get too busy. But a floral could pair with nearly any other pattern.

3. Pull colors from the prints you are working with. You’ll see that the floral dress that was the original item of clothing has so many colors! Everyone else is wearing a color from that dress. This ties the whole photo together.

4. Shop your closets. I bought my dress, and the green dress. Everything else we had! You don’t need a whole new outfit for everyone. I pulled several options and laid them together until I was happy with how the pieces looked together.

5. Find a fun location. Borders and Blooms flower farm was such a fun place to shoot! The kids were exploring all the flowers, the bumble bees, and we really enjoyed ourselves!

6. And lastly, but it’s so important, make sure you have a great photographer! If you are local to Payette, Idaho, we have Serene with Sweeten Photography take our pictures. She is the best. Nella was content for all of 30 seconds for her individual pictures, and that was all Serene needed. We also took these in the morning. During summer, that can make for some harsh lighting. But again, Serene knew how to work with the sun. She also got all of our photos taken in less than an hour. I also requested to shoot at a time when my family can be at their best. Most of the kids are adaptable. The baby is not. 😂 I knew we would not have a happy baby if we did sunset photos. She likes her bedtime.

Like any good mother, we followed up with McDonald’s at 9am when we were finished. For some that meant breakfast, for others that meant ice cream. 😉 Whatever it takes.
Outfit sources: Green dress, White dress, Purple dress is unavailable, but here is another great option. Tan chinos, blue button up shirts are old from The Children’s Place , but they have some great similar options! Chris’ Pink button up is old from Banana Republic Factory. Orange Romper is Cat & Jack, from Target. Sorry I don’t have links for everything. That’s just what happens when I shop our closets. 🤍
