Are you googling what a vignette is? Because I did. I was pretty sure I was using the right word, but wanted to make sure before I give you some key points on how to create one.
I’m talking about a vignette in relation to home decor. A vignette is a small grouping of decorative objects that make a statement in a room.
In our living room, we have several shelves that are for decor. Some came with the house, and some we built. Since the living room is probably the most seen room in the house, I often get comments on the shelves and how I’ve styled them.
Soon I’ll walk you through that process. But let’s start small. How do you create a vignette? Once you get that down, you’ll have a lot of fun styling shelves!

When I style a group of objects like this, I think of a few key words. Odd numbers, layers, texture, shapes.
1. Notice the grouping of odd numbers. 3 books. 3 objects in the bowl. 3 layers. (Books, bowl, items in the bowl). I most often group things in threes or five. Having an odd number ironically makes things looked balanced.
2. Layers. I mention the three layers here. You want to layer to create height and depth.
3. Textures. Here I used wood, ceramic, books, and faux plants to create different textures in one place.
4. Shapes. Use different shapes. You get round with the beads and candle, sharp corners with the book, and curves with the bowl and vase.
Keep these 4 simple guidelines in mind when you style a vignette and you will love what you create!
